‘Design thinking’, a problem-solving practice from Stanford University, is infused in everything students do. When this approach is applied to real-world challenges, students develop self-efficacy and find their creative purpose. They learn to adopt feedback as actionable information, and embrace the idea that effort is needed to push through anticipated set-backs. Our students leverage today’s emerging technology to accomplish their goals and express their ideas.

Design Tech's first campus was at Mills High School in Millbrae, California. School leaders had initially requested space at Burlingame High School, but district officials opined that there was no space available at BHS.[16] Intended to be a temporary campus, d.tech was located within a single hallway at Mills. In the first two weeks of school at the Mills campus, instead of attending academic classes, students were tasked with designing their classroom layouts. They were also required to take a field trip on the second day of school due to Mills' first day of school. Margarita is a Bay Area native who has worked in local schools and districts for 27 years.

Each afternoon, the daily schedule includes FLEX time, where students can meet with teachers for additional assistance or engage in independent learning time to work on assignments. Students who are not on pace in a particular class will be required to attend the teacher's referral period until they achieve competency on the course materials.
